Doubt and Dependency ~ default

as seeker wondered, he did not notice his own light ~ how it had begun to fade and with every self doubt and renunciation grow dimmer.

seeker listened.... and heard the voice of fear.

frightened voices loudly echoed in the encroaching darkness: “this path will soon end....” and, “there’s a ‘horrible beast’ beyond the next turn....” and, “we all are doomed: we cannot continue the journey alone.... it is an impossible task.... it is punishment.... we all shall   perish....”

when at last seeker noticed his light had nearly gone out, he decided, visited by fear, to walk nearer the person by his side.

seeker’s own light grew increasingly darker.

finally, seeker wearied of his seemingly mysterious burden ~ tired of noticing it at all, and  instantly....

his light vanished.

because the path now seemed less traveled and darker with each step, seeker ~ vulnerable and victim to his fear ~ followed even more closely to the person at his side.

this person’s name was ‘default’.

more and more people began to gather around default’s dim light, following in its shallow glow.

the light reflected off each person, causing the light to appear much larger than it actually was, causing each person to feel as though they carried their own light....

even though they knew it was only a cool reflection.

default began to believe the path could grow no darker, and he greatly doubted his ability to shine so many through.

as soon as this happened, default’s light began to fade.... steadily weakening with his mounting doubt.

default found he depended upon the dimming reflections of others; for, without them, he was forced to recognize the full extent of his only previously suspected frailty. at last ~ as the final doubt beleaguered default’s mind ~ his light suffused, leaving the followers shouting and blindly groping for one another in darkness.

default became desperate; for, he had become rather accustom to the sense of belonging and position of reverence he had enjoyed as appointed leader of the small group.

“wait....” default called, “my light will return if you only keep your faith!” realizing he could not shout above the others, default grabbed seeker who was overcome by fright and stood frozen and speechless. default held seeker tightly and cried: “others’ lights are useless! you must stay with me, you need me!”

for a moment seeker stood dazed, as if trying to comprehend the words of the one time leader. but, without any light to focus upon ~ to place faith and hope in ~ seeker jerked violently away.
